awesome band from bangkok. you heard it here first.
so i schlepped on down to IFC center last night to see this film The Exiles. it’s about a group of native americans in their early 20s living the fast life in downtown los angeles in the late 1950s. lots of what you’d expect: fast driving, hard drinking, awesome 50s rock on old jukeboxes, dark streets, smooth slang, menacing cops and drunks. it’s supposedly pretty true to form–the actors are actual people the filmmaker met while hanging around the area. if you live in nyc and have ever enjoyed film noir, bukowski, fante or even kerouac then this film will really be up your alley. go check it out. sadly, bunker hill is no longer home to flop houses and seedy bars. the area was razed in the 1960s and now houses the city’s massive skyscrapers. c’est la vie.

i hope everyone had a safe 4th of july weekend. mine was alright. it rained a lot during the fireworks, which seems to happen every year. now we’re in the thick of summer and the long, hot, droning boredom until labor day. don’t panic.
my july 4th plans:
-sit in apartment
-don’t leave apartment
-drink continuously
-go to bbqs and socialize and try to be a normal person (canceled)
i’ve been lazy lately. sorry. have a safe and happy 4th, everyone.
the times dropped one of their marquee stories of the year today; it involves khalid shaikh mohammed and the successful interrogation conducted by a green c.i.a. agent formerly working narcotics detail. among the interesting tidbits:
-poland is the “51st state”
-c.i.a. prison in thailand, prime minister unaware
-waterboarding approx. 100 times in 2 weeks (also torture method known as “belly slap” employed)
and most disturbingly, the times went ahead and identified deuce martinez, the c.i.a. agent in question, despite appeals against it from his lawyers (reasoning: personal safety). i’m on the fence about it… you have a five page article citing a dozen or so unnamed sources but you out one agent who is now private sector. seems kind of bush league. stand by your sources. for the record, mr. martinez declined to be interviewed.
anyways i’m drunk and i gotta wake up at 7 to go to jfk… but read it. it’s more frightening than inspiring, IMHO.
this makes me almost want to be a teacher. kids are awesome
